TULSA - Fifty one Oklahoma high school students received medallions Tuesday for achievements in music, theater, dance and visual arts as 1991 winners of the State Superintendent's Award of Arts Excellence.
"Arts in education are vital to our children. A child educated without the arts is not entirely educated," state superintendent Sandy Garrett said in concluding ceremonies of "Connections 1991," a two-day meeting focusing on arts education.
Garrett said "many talented students may never have the opportunity to discover those talents without quality art experience in the schools.
"These experiences are made possible by partnerships in local communities between schools, arts councils and other organizations. " Garrett presented the awards, which honor students for talent and achievement. The winners are high school seniors nominated by arts and education agencies.
The 51 winning students were chosen from 150 nominees, based on standards established by several state arts organizations.
Many arts supporters are particularly worried that budget cuts and the back-to-the-basics movement have undercut arts programs in schools.
