DAYTONA BEACH -- The new Daytona Playhouse production "is the perfect date show," says director Timothy Turner.
"I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" is a musical comedy "with everything you ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit," Turner says. A Longwood resident and professional performer, director and producer, Turner has worked on 47 productions since moving to Central Florida in 2001, but "I Love You" is his first for the Playhouse.
Since opening off-Broadway in 1996, the play by Joe Di Pietro and Jimmy Roberts has become the longest running musical revue of all time, breaking the record set by "Smokey Joe's Cafe," Turner says.
The musical "is not heavyweight entertainment," he says, adding one critic called it " 'Seinfeld' set to music."
However, Turner says, "There are moments, particularly in act two, when the poignancy of the show sneaks up on you. The show spans a lifetime of relationships -- from the pains of dating and trying to find a mate, through marriage and children, to starting again after a divorce, and finding companionship after the loss of a spouse."
The cast of four includes Carole Rohrberger and Nicole Smith of Ormond Beach, Cory Sowers of Daytona Beach and Aaron Collins of Edgewater. They'll be busy -- the play calls for them to portray 50 characters, while the musical styles range from pop to jazz to gospel.
