EUSTIS -- If you like your comedy slapstick and your humor broad, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is right up your alley.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove, the combination has proved irresistible on stage and film since 1962.
The Bay Street Players, under the direction of David Clevinger, will open their run of the fast-paced comedy at 8 p.m. today.
"It has been a huge team effort, putting on such a big show," said Elizabeth Scholl, executive director of the Bay Street Players.
Ken Rush plays Pseudolus, the wily slave who strives to earn his freedom by arranging a romance between his young master and a dim-witted girl.
"I have the joy of doing a role done previously by Zero Mostel and Nathan Lane," Rush said. "But I can stretch my creativity through the character because everything is so over-the-top."
Rush said he was delighted to act with Bay Street regular Ashley Richards, who plays Hysterium.
"We are cohorts in crime," he said.
The cast also features Kelly Fagan as Domina, Michael Scholl as Senex, Austin Bakich as Hero, Jennifer Dobson as Philia, Jonathan Olson as Miles Gloriosus and Elmo Adams as Erronius.
Timothy Turner is the music director, Adrian LePeltier is the choreographer and William Dumas is the lighting designer. Paula Toth designed the costumes.
Forum will continue at the State Theater, 109 N. Bay St., through April 23.
Tickets are $16 and $13 on Thursday. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m.
