“Jekyll & Hyde,” the musical, comes to Kissimmee
October 1, 2014, 5:25 PM
Robert Louis Stevenson's classic horror story of good and evil was turned into a musical in 1990 and made its Broadway debut in 1997. Never a favorite of critics, the musical garnered a faithful following among theatergoers drawn to its pop-friendly score that features such soaring ballads as "This Is the Moment" and "Someone Like You."
The Osceola Center for the Arts now presents the show, which tells the story of Henry Jekyll, a brilliant doctor whose experiments in human morality create an alternate — and murderous — personality named Edward Hyde.
The musical is traditionally a showcase for the actor who plays Jekyll/Hyde; at the center, Omar Jamille Velázquezwill star. He is joined by Savannah Simerly, who has starred in "Hairspray" and "Avenue Q" for the Bay Street Players in Eustis. She plays Lucy, a prostitute who catches the eye of both Jekyll and Hyde.
Marina Jurica-Preston, meteorologist at WFTV-Channel 9 plays Emma, Dr. Jekyll's patient fiancée. Jurica-Preston recently starred as Nancy in the Starving Artist Studios production of "Oliver!" Timothy Turner directs.
"Jekyll and Hyde" opens Oct. 17 at the center, 2411 E. Irlo Bronson Highway, Kissimmee. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Oct. 23, 2 p.m. Sundays, through Nov. 2.
2nd Thursday 7:30pm, Fridays & Saturdays 7:30pm, Sundays 2pm
Tickets are $22, $19 seniors, $15 students. Call 407-846-6257, Ext. 0, or go to ocfta.com.
