DayStar Studio brings 'Spring Awakening' to Dr. Phillips Center
by Matthew J. Palm, The Artistic Type
"Spring Awakening" at the Dr. Phillips Center
WHAT: DayStar Studio Productions will open "Spring Awakening," the coming-of-age story set to music by Duncan Sheik, this Sunday, June 19. In 2007, the show won the trifecta of top Tonys: best musical, best score and best book (storyline and dialogue) in a musical.
"Spring Awakening" follows a group of young students as they discover who they are in spite of strict parents and the repressive society of 19th-century Germany. In keeping with the themes of youth and rebellion, DayStar has put together an international, multicultural cast and creative team.
"It was important to us to showcase the talent of so many people that tend to be under-represented in theater and on Broadway," said Luz Estella Orrego, community outreach director for DayStar Studios Productions. "Shows like 'Hamilton' and others are helping to blur the racial lines that exist in the entertainment industry."
In the cast are Anton Häggblom and Noa Carmel, as troubled Melchior and Wendla, along with Danny Harris Kornfield, Ashley Marie Lewis, Chase Riner, Trevor Starr, Luis Gabriel Diaz, Juan David Robayo, Kayla Alvarez, Amelia Bryant, Lauren Brown, Caisey Cole, Lyle Moon and Wendy Starkand.
Jacques Broquett Sportelli is director, and Timothy D. Turner is musical director.
As with the original Broadway production, a limited number of seats will be available onstage.
WHERE: Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave., Orlando
WHEN: 1 and 6 p.m. Sundays, June 19 and 26; 7:30 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, June 20-21; 2:30 and 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, June 22-25
