The Orange Studio Address: 1121 N Mills Ave, Orlando, FL 32803 Phone: (407) 760-5951 About Ken NordineKen Nordine (born April 13, 1920 in Cherokee, Iowa) is an American voice-over and recording artist, best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that "you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you'll almost certainly recognize his voice."
The son of Theresia and Nore S. Nordine, a contractor, Ken Nordine was born in Cherokee, Iowa. The family later moved to Chicago, where he attended Lane Technical College Prep High School and the University of Chicago. He has three sons with his wife Beryl whom he married in 1945. During the 1940s, he was heard on The World's Great Novels and other radio programs broadcast from Chicago. He attracted wider attention when he recorded the aural vignettes on Word Jazz (Dot, 1957). Love Words, Son of Word Jazz (Dot, 1958) and his other albums in this vein feature Nordine's narration over cool jazz by the Fred Katz Group featuring Chico Hamilton recording under an alias. Nordine began performing and recording such albums at the peak of the beat era and was associated with the poetry-and-jazz movement. However, it has been observed that some of Nordine's writings "are more akin to Franz Kafka or Edgar Allan Poe" than to the beats. Many of his word jazz tracks feature critiques of societal norms. Some are lightweight and humorous, while others reveal dark, paranoid undercurrents and bizarre, dream-like scenarios. Nordine's DVD, The Eye Is Never Filled, (2005) provides a flow of abstract visuals to accompany the audio tracks. Nordine currently hosts a weekly radio program and maintains residences in Chicago, Illinois, and Spread Eagle, Wisconsin. Ken Nordine "Colors" from YouTube.comNews
Video: Ken Nordine turns 90, gives us a trippy tour of his house/studio Justin Kaufmann April 29, 2010 One of the joys of working for Chicago Public Radio is to come in contact with some amazing broadcast legends. Ken Nordine definitely fits in that category. When I was a radio student at Columbia College, my production teachers would play Nordine's Word Jazz to give us inspiration for what was possible in audio. Nordine is the host of Word Jazz, the trippy audio-art program that airs Sundays at midnight on WBEZ. This month, he turned 90. Yep, that's right. He's 90 years old and he's still producing new Word Jazz episodes from his studios on Chicago's far North side. We were lucky enough to be invited up to his house, where the third floor/attic serves as his long-time studio. Here's the video piece we put together, featuring Steve Edwards on lead-interview. From the Orlando SentinelAn artist’s palette could be so lucky as to include the colors seen in “Voci Dance: Paint Chips.”
Ken Nordine’s 1960s album “Colors” serves as the soundtrack for “Paint Chips.” It’s jazzy, psychedelic and cool, boss. Video projections enhance the groovy story Nordine and the dancers tell. Each piece is danced by a different color, and the dancer(s) follow the choreography of Genevieve Bernard, as well as Nordine’s directives. “Green can be a problem.” “Olive, poor thing sits and thinks that it’s drab.” “Yellow … weeps yellow tears.” Voci Dance has earned much respect for its work over the past 15 years. “Paint Chips” continues that tradition of excellence while incorporating wit and humor. “If there wasn’t a color for mud, ”Nordine’s velvety voice declares, “there would be little hope for soap.” Lisa Mie was particularly impressive at fusing dance technique with animated characterizations. Her transition from drab Olive, to the discovery Olive is the color of the year was delightful. Also noteworthy: her portrayal of Magenta, a gossip columnist. The only disappointment was the ending; I was hoping for a rainbow but only got “flesh.” A stronger conclusion would give the audience a better sense of fulfillment and provide a more colorful note on which to end.
